COURSE CONTENT

Every day class will begin with math bellwork.  This is a short worksheet for students to develop and refine basic skills in numeracy.  Most exercises involve financial math, such as calculating pay deductions, writing checks and budgeting.

Every Wednesday students will complete a fill-in-the-blank note on a topic related to the Learning Strategies curriculum.  Those notes will be used in the open-book portion of the final exam.  Following the note, students must create three possible test questions that relate to the material from the note.

Every week students will complete one journal entry on a topic related to their studies, post-secondary education, career planning or employment.

Every week students will participate in ERBAS.  ERBAS stands for Everybody Reads Books at Sandwich.  After 20 minutes of silent reading, students will complete a worksheet on Making Connections to identify how the text relates to themselves, other text and the world.


Starting Monday, November 9, students will complete a weekly Research Crossword Worksheet in the form of a crossword puzzle instead of the ERBAS reflection sheet.

Every two weeks students will be given a mini-project on a topic related to the Learning Strategies curriculum.

Starting in January 2016, students will read newspaper articles relevant to the curriculum to practice skills in summarizing and making connections.  The articles are posted as PDF files below.


Mrs. Kerr will examine the students' notebooks on a regular basis to ensure that the students are organized.


HOMEWORK TIME

Students are strongly encouraged to complete homework from other courses during this class.  Students must prioritize to ensure that work for learning strategies is also completed in a timely manner. The students' use of class time will be documented to verify that the student is on track and using class time effectively.
